West Lake Hills, Texas is one of the more valuable residential suburbs of Austin. Located in Travis County, it has a relatively modest history, and is moderately young, especially in comparison to some of the historically rich suburbs of the Austin area.

The town was incorporated in 1953, and was created as a small, family oriented suburb for the workers of the city. The city grew very slowly, and has continued its growth since at the same slow pace. In 1960, the population was approximately 700 people. By 1970, it had doubled to around 1400 people. It continued to grow at a similar pace ever since. In 1980, it had around 1900 residents, about 2500 in 2000, and a little more than 3100 in 2008.

What started as a humble residential area on the outskirts of Austin has changed into something quite different along the way, however. Whereas it was initially an area created for blue collar workers, it has now become one of the higher-end suburbs of the Austin area.

All of the average financial figures of the town are considerably higher than those of most of the other Austin suburbs, from median income, to per capita income, to median home price. The Median income in West Lake Hills is a little over $130,000 a year. The average for the rest of Texas is only little more than $47,000. The per capita average income for the town is slightly more than $66,000, almost $40,000 per year higher than the average per capita income of the rest of the state.

Unlike the rest of the nation, the average home price in West Lake Hills has not seen a rapid decline in the last few years. It seems as though the village, as a whole has been largely unaffected by the housing crisis and recession that has affected so many other Austin areas and suburbs. In 2000, the average home price in West Lake Hills was $300,400. By the last fiscal quarter, that price had risen to over $505,000. To put this in perspective, the average home price for the entire state of Texas is only $120,900.

The area continues to be a town that is in high demand, and the properties located within maintain a high level of desirability. It is not surprising to find multiple million dollar properties for sale in the town of West Lake Hills, however, the one trend that has been universal, even in this austere suburb, has been the decline in sales. There are two main factors to this phenomenon. First, once people have a home in the town, they typically do not want to leave, and second, as a recession hits, it becomes harder for new people to afford homes in the area.

For a town with such humble beginnings, West Lake Hills has elevated itself to a very desirable level of distinction.

Wells Creek, Texas, a small suburb of Austin has a history that has been forgotten by most, but, especially in our time of modern patriotism, is one that should be brought back to the forefront. The small town was originally created as nothing less than a monument to a soldier of Texas, long before it was simply a suburb of Austin.

In the very early 19th century, a local Austin man by the name of Martin Wells was raising a family in the small town of Mina, now known as Bastrop. He had a wife and a son, Wayman. He was a proud member of local government, and upstanding member of the community. He and his family were happy.

But, within Texas, there was unrest. Colonists of the area desperately wanted independence from Mexico, and were slowly deciding that they were ready to fight for it. In the two year period of 1835 and 1836, two major events happened that would forever shape what was to later become Wells Creek. First, in 1835, Texas settlers made their decision and took arms against Mexico in a fight for their independence. Second, in 1836, Martin died of natural causes, leaving Wayman on his own as a man.

Shortly after his father’s death, Wayman joined the revolution, and was a fierce participant. He was a part of numerous battles throughout the war, but made his mark as a hero in the Battle of San Jacinto in April of 1836, when Texas won its freedom.

Because of his heroics in the battle, Waymon was awarded a land grant from Stephen F. Austin, the namesake of another Texas town, as well as one from the newly formed Republic of Texas. The land was approximately 1,170 acres nestled against a branch of Little Walnut Creek. Wayman and his new wife, Mary Emily, moved to the land and built a residence there.

The town of Austin grew up around them and Wayman became active in the politics and civic activities of the city. He became the Travis County Commissioner, and later, the trustee for the Austin Insane Asylum. He had a home at 912 W. 26th St., and remained living there until his death in 1878.

The branch of the creek was named in his honor as Wells Branch, and later, the whole of his original land that was granted to him in honor of his service to Texas was also named for him as the town of Wells Creek.

Taylor, Texas is a town started by business, supported by business, and a town that created its own monumental Texas businesses afterward. The town was born solely by the Texas Land Company, the state’s largest company at the time, and went on to create the state’s first large savings and loan company.

In 1876, it was known to the Texas Land Company that the International-Great Northern Railroad was planning on building a new line through what would now be Taylor. In anticipation of the arrival of the railroad, the company split its land in the area into lots and auctioned them off.

The lots were largely bought by railroad executives, and they created a town. The town was named after a railroad executive named Edward Moses Taylor. Initially, it was named Taylorsville, but the name was shortened to Taylor when the town was officially incorporated in 1882.

Originally, the town was settled by Czechoslovakian and other Slavic immigrants, and later also attracted numerous immigrants from Germany and Austria. These immigrants found success when the railroad line was finally built through the town. It became a busy shipping point on the railroad for cattle, grain, and cotton.

The town grew very quickly, based on the success of its shipping business. By 1878, the town had over 1,000 residents, and over 32 businesses. It was a thriving frontier town, full of individual success. However, 20 of the local businesses were ruined in a fire that consumed the town in 1879. The future looked bleak for the town, until, in 1882, the Taylor, Bastrop and Houston Railroad brought a second railroad line through the town.

Having two separate railroad lines run through the town made it easy to rebuild, as there was now a need for not only a shipping industry in the town, but now also a need for a machine shop industry and a roundhouse to service both lines. The majority of the businesses that were destroyed in the fire were rebuilt by 1890, and the economy of the town was again thriving. The town opened the state’s first savings and loan to handle the economy of the bustling town.

Taylor remained an economic powerhouse throughout the end of the century and attracted such novel new business as an electric company, a cotton compress, and many different newspapers. It grew throughout the turn of the century, until larger neighboring towns, such as Austin began to eclipse it, and started to steal new businesses away from it. By the last census, the town had grown to a level of over 13,000 residents.

San Marcos, Texas can not only boast that is the oldest human settlement in Texas, but also that it is argued to be as old as the oldest human settlement in the northern hemisphere. This town, a substantial suburb of Austin, has been teeming with life for over 10,000 years.

Archaeologists have found proof of the existence of the Cloivis culture, a prehistoric Paleolithic Indian culture first appearing directly after the Ice Age, throughout the area of San Marcos. Among the archaeological sites found in the area has been proof of continued human habitation ever since.

In 1689, a group of Spaniards exploring the area reached the river at San Marcos after traveling for months from Mexico. Their journey had been a trying one, and upon reaching the river, they stopped for a much-needed break. The day that they happened to reach the river was April 25, also known as the feast day of St. Mark the Evangelist. For this reason, the Spaniards named the river the San Marcos.

The first modern village on the location was created in the year 1808 when a small group of Mexican farmers settled at the river crossing and built homes. The village was short-lived, however, as the farmers were continually plagued by flood and Indian attack. In 1812, the settlers abandoned the village.

The area remained vacant until 1846 when the first Anglo settlers inhabited it. A small town was created around the springs of the San Marcos River, and for the next two years it slowly grew. In mid-1848, the Texas Legislature created a new county, named Hayes. They designated San Marcos as the county seat, and set the borders of Hayes County so that San Marcos would be close to the center.

The town became a business center. It was active in milling, ginning, and was an active market for agricultural products. The river was later dammed, and the waterpower was used to create even more mills. The businesses were, in and of themselves, enough to continually attract new settlers to the area, but the added help that came from the addition of the International-Great Northern Railroad line to the city made the population grow at a very rapid pace.

A university was opened here in 1899, focusing on the education of new teachers. The university steadily grew and expanded its breadth. It has gone through a few different incarnations, but has continually grown. The university is still there, now known as Texas State University, and boasts a student body consisting of over 28,000 people.

During World War II, the city attracted men from many neighboring towns, due to its production jobs. Most of the businesses in the area were converted to help with the war effort, and as a result, job creation skyrocketed, and with it so did the town's population.

In the 1960s, two popular tourist attractions were opened in the city. Aquarena Springs and Wonder World caused tourism to become a major part of San Marcos' thriving economy. The population continued to grow throughout the 60s, and when neighboring Austin experienced a large population growth of its own, San Marcos started growing even faster as a result. Since the late 70s, the town has continued to see steady growth, and as of the last census, it could boast over 35,000 residents.

Round Rock, Texas, and inner ring suburb of Austin located in Travis County Texas, is a town on the rise. Like many other Austin suburbs, Round Rock benefited greatly from Austin's population explosion of the late 1970s. However, unlike the rest of the Austin suburbs, Round Rock used Austin's population explosion to create an even stronger one in their own town.

Round Rock has had a banner year. Its praises have been sung by numerous publications and its growth continues to increase. Last August, Round Rock was named as the seventh best small-town to live in of America. This would have given Round Rock more than enough cause for bragging within Texas, but compounding the victory was the fact that no other town in Texas even made the list.

The basis for this decision was the record numbers that Round Rock was showing. The average median income within the town was a towering $85,000, a considerably higher amount than the rest of Texas's average. Along with the high level of median income was an incredibly high level of new job growth. At just over a 45%, Round Rock's new job rate soared over the national average of only 18.8%.

Later, in July of 2009, Round Rock garnered more awards. It was in this month that CNN named the city the second fastest growing city in the nation. The city's rate of population growth, over 8 1/2%, can easily be witnessed by watching the historic trends in the census poll. In 2000, the town had a population of just under 80,000 people. However, by 2008, it already reached a level of population of over 150,000 people. However, it was not always this way.

Round Rock had humble beginnings. It was started as a small community on Brushy Creek in 1851. The location of the town was chosen because it was next to an area of the Creek that contained a large round rock in the middle of the creek that made fording the creek extremely easy. Because of its ease of crossing, this became one of the first destinations on the Chisholm Trail, and as a result brought in numerous settlers.

The town grew into a frontier town and had its share of "Wild West" stories, but the best known is that of train robber Sam Bass. It was in the town of Round Rock that Bass was eventually hunted down and avoided capture with the epic gunfight known as "the Sam Bass Shoot out". The shoot out is still remembered, and is in fact reenacted annually in Round Rock's downtown area.

Rollingwood was founded in 1955 by George B. Hatley. At least founded the town and proceeded to develop the area, creating the whole community himself. Small idyllic community that he created slowly brought in new residents. By 1965, the town was incorporated and had a population of almost 400 people. The residents decided on a mayor-council form of government, and from the very beginning have been known to be very impassioned on all the works and acts of the government.

By 1970, this impassioned viewpoint of their city had attracted enough new residents to nearly double their population to almost 800 people. From the beginning, the municipality strove to be independent of the larger cities around them, specifically Austin. As for this reason that from the outset, Rollingwood maintained its own police and fire departments.

Rollingwood continue to grow at a steady pace. In 1980 there were approximately 1100 residents. By 1990, there were almost 1300 residents. In this number had grown again by the year 2002 to a level of almost 1400 residents.

The civic pride and close proximity to Austin have always made at Rollingwood a popular and expensive place for real estate. It is for this reason that Rollingwood, possibly more than any other Austin suburb, has resisted the effects of the recent housing crisis and recession. In fact, Rollingwood has not only resisted housing value decline, it is actually continued to increase, in terms of housing value, up to the level that it currently is.

While the average home price throughout Texas is only $120,000, the average home price in Rollingwood is nearly $450,000. In the year 2000, however, the average home price in Rollingwood was only approximately $250,000. The level of increase that Rollingwood is shown in its average home price throughout the recession is unmatched by any of the other Austin area suburbs. It is for this reason that Rollingwood typically has less home sales and other Austin suburbs, and in that area is desirable enough that most residents do not want to leave.

Pflugerville, Texas, a suburb of Austin, located in Travis and Williamson counties was founded in the 1800s. It went through periods of growth, rapid decline, and finally resurgence. It successfully fought annexation from Austin and is now its own municipality and suburb.

The namesake of the town, Henry Pflueger, Senior, was a German immigrant and one-time wealthy farmer. However, while still in Germany, Pflueger lost his fortune and found financial ruin. The Prussian War caused all of Pflueger's land to be taken from him. Pflueger fled Germany and emigrated to the Texas area. With his final $1600 he purchased 160 acres of land 2 miles east of Austin. He and his family stayed on this land for a few years and in 1849 he traded the land for larger plot about 5 miles east of what is now Pflugerville. They are, he and his family built a five room log cabin and started farming.

It was not until after the Civil War that Pflugerville would start to find settlers. Another family, headed by William Bohls, followed the Pfluegers and built a house on the neighboring property. The Bohls family opened a general store and a post office in their home, and named a post office after Pflueger. Shortly thereafter, a Lutheran church and a small community school or opened, and residents started pouring in.

In 1904, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad completed a line between Austin and Georgetown. This line ran just outside of Pflugerville, as a result over the next two decades, the population of Pflugerville doubled from 250 to 500. During this time, Pflugerville built a thriving Main Street, despite the fact that most residents did the majority of their business and shopping in the town of Round Rock, located 8 miles to the northwest.

The railroad attracted a lot of businesses to the area, which in turn attracted a lot more settlers. The first business to land in the area was a steam powered cotton gin, which attracted cotton farmers from around the county. Later an ice factory was built beside the cotton gin, in 1913, a movie theater was built in the town, the Skye Dome Theatre. The theater played silent movies, accompanied by a piano player.

The depression and later, World War II, caused a sharp decline in population in Pflugerville, as many left for bigger cities in the attempt to find work. After World War II, the population fell back to a level of only 250 people. It was not until the 1960s that Pflugerville would find its resurgence. In 1965 the town was incorporated, and had a population of 750 people. This number would slowly grow until the population boom felt in Austin in the 70s had its effect here as well. Since then, Pflugerville has thrived as a suburb of Austin, and by 2000, its population had skyrocketed to over 11,000 people.

Lockhart, Texas, the county seat of Caldwell County, had humble beginnings, but has grown to be a respectable community and the home of County government in Caldwell. Started by the first Anglo man to set foot in what is now called the county, Lockhart started as a small farming town, and became a center of activity in the newly formed County.

In the early 1800s, a man named Green Dewitt was tasked with setting up county boundaries throughout Texas. This was not a task that could be done alone, and in multiple assistants. One of these assistants was a man named Byrd Lockhart. In his surveying work, Lockhart ended up being the first to set foot in what would now become Caldwell County.

Lockhart took it upon himself to create the roadways and trails that would connect this area to the rest of inhabited Texas. Using his own money in his own means, Lockhart said up method of travel between the larger cities in his own plot of land. Other settlers came to the area, and as a result a small community was started. Originally, this community was named after Lockhart and was on the outskirts of Gonzales County.

Throughout its early life, however, residents were dismayed by the quality of roads connecting Lockhart to the county seat of Gonzales, and more importantly, dismayed by the distance to get there. As a result, they made the decision to create a new county, and to place their town as the center of the county and the new county seat.

The new county was named after Capt. Matthew Caldwell. Caldwell was a scout for the Texas Rangers, an adept and skilled fighter. His individual band of Rangers would fight in the Battle of Plum Creek, and later go on to fight against Mexico in the fight to grant Texas its own Republic. He was considered a local hero, which is why they named the county in his honor.

Eventually, the droughts of the late 1800s made agriculture here quite difficult. Growing and cultivating corn and other agrarian crops became next to impossible within Caldwell County. However the one plant that had no problem growing, grass, made the county excellent land for raising and driving cattle. Because of this that Lockhart's first major cattle drive was long what would become to be known the Chisholm Trail. Due to his excess on this cattle drive, and great grazing land of Caldwell County, Lockhart would become a major stopping point on the Chisholm Trail.

In the 1920s, Lockhart had a taste of oil, as so many other small Texas towns did, and found a small level of success in the oil business. There are enough shallow oilfields in the area, and were the time, but smaller but successful oil wells were formed and are still actively pumping today.

Leander, Texas, sister city to Cedar Park, Texas, and shares much of the violent history that Cedar Park is known for. If not for the 10,000 year old skeleton found in Leander, the violent massacre that took place here in 1839, would most likely still be its only claim to fame.

Leander and Cedar Park are both located in areas ideal for life. Nestled into the rushing creek, these areas have supported life for what is now known to be over 10,000 years. From Neanderthals all the way to Native Americans on up to modern man, Leander has been a cradle of life since before history.

The modern town of Leander was created in a bloody way, however. In 1839, on the side of what is now Leander, Texas, the Webster Massacre, also known as the Brushy Creek Massacre, occurred. The Webster family, a family of settlers, attempted to flee a band of violent Indians. Their flight only made it to what is now Leander where they were brutally murdered.

The spot of the massacre was always remembered, and a year later in 1840, a fort was built in the location for the protection of the remaining settlers of the area. This eventually grew into the area in town known as Baghdad.

By 1881, Baghdad was a thriving town. It had numerous stores and scores of residents. When the Austin and Northwest Railroad decided to build a line through Baghdad, however, the residents opposed it. This turned out to be a poor decision on the part of Baghdad. The railroad simply bought land directly outside of the city limits and built its line through that land. In 1884, a completed the line, and to celebrate, opened a new town on the border of Baghdad. The town was named after a local railroad executive, Leander "Catfish" Brown.

It did not take long for the new town of Leander to fully eclipse its neighbor to the west, Baghdad. Within one decade Baghdad no longer existed, and Leander was a fast-growing community. The power of the railroad line to bring new residents was a factor that Baghdad simply could not compete with.

Linda has continued to grow and is now a thriving inner ring suburb of Austin. What started as a simple log cabin has now become a thriving community with more than 25,000 residents. Leander and neighboring Cedar Park are two of the most visited Austin suburbs that there are.

In 1873, the University was founded in the town of Georgetown. Southwestern University, the oldest school in Texas, it's still there and has a storied history all its own. This University, coupled with the advent of the Austin and Northwestern Railroad, brought a steady influx of new residents to the area. This pattern continued steadily all the way through the city's history.

Agriculture, specifically cotton, was a driving factor of population growth in the town until sometime around the 1950s when the general makeup of the city began to change. As Austin continued to grow larger and quicker, the effect of that growth was felt by many neighboring communities. By the 1960s, the main form of growth within Georgetown was no longer one based on railroads and neck or culture, but was instead one based on influx of residential and commercial properties.

In 1963, while building an interstate, a large cave was discovered, the first in the area. Inner space cavern, as it was to be known, was a massive cave structure that prior to this point was completely on discovered. Large portions of the cave structure remain unexplored, and for this reason, the cave has become a very popular tourist destination. The cave opened for tourists in 1966, and has remained active ever since. Visitors are loaded into a cable car that descends into the cave and are able to tour over a mile of the cave's structure.

Cedar Park, Texas, and inner ring suburb of Austin, is not only one of the first towns of Williamson County, it is one of the oldest settlements of Texas as a whole. In fact, due to its location on the water of Brushy Creek, it has been found in an archaeological dig that they are our remnants of many different settlements on the location, dating back to almost 5000 BC.

Cedar Park as we know it today was initially founded as a fort for the Texas Rangers in 1836. This fort is widely believed to be the first building ever constructed in Williamson County. The Rangers, however, will only occupied the fort for two months before they were called away to Bastrop to help settlers escape from Indian attacks. When Rangers returned in 1837, they found that the fort had been burned to the ground, and they were forced to rebuild. Two years later, a few miles north, one of the worst massacres in Texas history, the Webster party massacre, occurred. This massacre was enough to scare off potential settlers for the next 10 years, and as a result the area was slow to grow.

After enough time passed, the massacre was forgotten and settlers started to trickle in. The area remains sparsely populated until the 1870s, when the area became well known for its cattle industry. One of the first Parents of the area was named George Washington Cluck, the man who later would found the town of Cedar Park.

In 1871, Cluck and his family completed a massive cattle drive to Abilene, despite constant attack from Indians and rustlers. Upon their successful return, the family purchased 320 acres of land on the Creek, and began to build a much larger log home. Other families came and began to populate the area around his home, and this was the beginning of what is now Cedar Park. Initially, the residents decided on the name Running Brushy for their settlement and it remained the name until 1882 when it was changed to Bruggerhoff. At this point the Austin Northwest railroad purchased some land from Cluck, and establish a station here.

This railroad station is what would cause the small community to boom into a thriving city. Around this time residents started to complain about the name of their town, saying it was too hard to pronounce and too hard to spell. Upon urging from the residence, Cluck changed the name to Cedar Park and opened a one acre walking park directly across from the station. This park was a radio or destination for residents of Austin to take day trips and enjoy the beauty.

Cedar Park continued to grow as a neighboring community to Austin all the way until the late 1900s. In the late 80s, as Austin was attempting to annex neighboring communities, Cedar Park was incorporated, and officially became one of the largest suburbs to Austin. In 1990, the population of Cedar Park was approximately 10,000. Due to its proximity to Austin and Austin's booming growth, by the last census, the population had grown to over 90,000.

Camp Swift, Texas is a small census designated place, but was once an area consistently teeming with up to 90,000 people are regular basis. The area has a colorful history, filled with military stories, horrific tales of murder, and humorous stories of prisoner escape.

Camp Swift, about 30 miles east of Austin, was established in 1940. While Pearl Harbor was a surprise to most, the US government had actually been prepared for some sort of attack, and as early as 1939 were already preparing for war. It was in this mindset that can't Swift was created. It was created and designated it as a camp in 1940, but work cannot begin on building the facilities until 1942. At that time the nearly 3000 buildings were constructed from scratch and only 140 days, at a cost of almost $25 million.

Initially, the camp was solely a training facility for infantry, but slowly took on more roles. A large number of combat medics and nurses were also trained here. Due to this fact, there was a shortage of nurses for all the area hospitals that lasted until well after the war. During these times, the area was driving with activity, but did not reach its full potential until later in the war when it also tells a prisoner of war camp for captured German and Russian soldiers.

Soldiers being trained here were regularly bussed to Austin, and as a result, a thriving transportation business was created here and still remains. The Kerrville Bus Company had an exclusive contract to bus the soldiers back and forth between camp swift in Austin, and made record profits doing so.

Some of the more colorful tales of the area come as a result of the prisoners and detainees located at the camp. At one point, a group of German detainees donned suits, stolen from their guards, and boarded a hot air balloon, in an attempt to escape. These detainees received an excellent aerial view of the infantry training before crashing their balloon and being captured. In one instance, a German soldier escaped and ran, only to be sent to the hospital with a dog bite on his bottom, due to the fact that a dog had smelled the piece of bologna that he had hidden in his back pocket. More bear seeing for the soldier was the fact that this dog was a German Shepherd.

In 1942, there was a grisly murder at the camp. One of the camps trainees, George S. Knapp, was known for having mental problems, and prior to being drafted was a resident of the mental facility in St. Paul Minnesota. On one of his leaves, he stole a commander's car and drove to Austin. However, shortly outside of camp he encountered a girl walking home from school. The offered to give her a ride, but when he refused to take her home, she began to become hysterical. In an effort to silence her, Knapp strangled her and dumped her in a field. He was quickly cut and confessed to the murder, and shortly after was court-martialed and sentenced to be executed.

Can't Swift is still a National Guard facility and small-town. As of the last census taking, there were about 4000 residents in the area.

Burnet, Texas is a town right with history, some of which could be taken directly from the pages of a classic western novel. While being a relatively small town with a population of only 5000 people, it is nonetheless a town with heritage and a community of people who are very proud of that history.

Burnet, Texas was not always Burnet, Texas. In fact, it didn't start out as a town at all. In 1847 a division of the Texas Rangers set up shop in what would later become Burnet Texas and established a station for the sole purpose of protecting local settlers from outlaws and Indians. The station found no small level of success and as a result, in 1849 it was selected to become a federal fort and was named Fort Croghan.

In 1852, and surrounding area was gaining new settlers and numerous small towns were popping up, so they established the area as a county, and named it Burnet. When the county was established, a town was created at Fort Croghan, named Hamilton, after John Hamilton, a local landowner and employer. Later that year a post office was established in town and shortly thereafter became the county courthouse.

Hamilton continued to prosper and grow, but in 1857, a group of residents began to petition for a name change. They did not like the fact that there was another town in Texas also named Hamilton and felt straight, and felt that the town should be named Burnet as well, in honor of David G. Burnet, the first provisional President of the Republic of Texas. In 1859, the Austin in Northwest railroad set Burnet as the railhead to the area to the west, and the population skyrocketed because of this. Burnet continued to grow steadily until 1892 when the railhead was moved farther west to Llano. From this point onward, Burnet would be a farming and livestock center, and the population would decline until reaching the steady level it is at today.

Burnett has other claims to fame as well. Three miles outside of the city is a marble quarry that was owned by Samuel E. Holland. A large block of the marble from his quarry was shipped to Austin as a gift and was later sent to Washington DC, where became one of the parts of the foundation for the Washington Monument.

Burnett was officially incorporated as a city in 1933. The population at the time was approximately 4000 people, and since that time has maintained a relatively stable level of population.

Brushy Creek, Texas is a small census designated place in Williamson County Texas, outside the Austin area. It has gone through some small periods of growth, but typically has followed them up with relative periods of decline in population. As of the most recent census, Brushy Creek as a town itself had only 50 residents, although the surrounding countryside that makes up the census designated place is comprised of over 15,000 people.

Brushy Creek was initially settled in the early 1840s. No one knows for sure the names of the initial settlers, but it is known that this group of settlers immigrated to the area in a wagon train from South Carolina. The area they came from, coincidentally, was Brushy Creek South Carolina, and this accounts for the fact that not only the town, but most of the surrounding streams are named Brushy Creek.

By 1858, the community had grown to a size of approximately 300 people, and started building some community buildings, some of which are still there, and are designated as Texas historical landmarks. Most notable were the combination one room school house and church, and the Olive Branch Cemetery. The cemetery can still be visited, and graves dating back to 1856 can still be seen.

As the surrounding areas began to be settled, Brushy Creek began to lose some of its residents to the neighboring communities. This was a trend that continued all the way until the 1940s. New residents would arrive, but at the same time more would leave.

For small time in the 1940s, this changed. Because of this change was the discovery of oil throughout the area. For the next 20 years, as wells were placed, and the will was harvested, the population of the actual town increased to over 300 residents for the first time in over 50 years. However as the oil wells tried up in the late 60s, the population began to decline again.

Brushy Creek, while being a small town, is a desirable area to live for those hoping to stay moderately close to Austin without having to live in a city. As a result, the town and the surrounding area have been largely unaffected by the recent housing crisis and recession. The median income in the area still remains far above national averages at $85,000 a year, and the average home price has maintained a constant level right around the $150,000 mark.

The booming metropolis was quickly growing and as of 1850 had reached a booming populace of 900 people. Bohls realized that he would need to move from the city in order to give his children the upbringing he desired for them. This would be the beginning of a tradition of resisting the control of "big government" that has stayed with Bee Cave ever since.

When Bohls made this decision lands west of Austin were still teaming with Indian activity. This meant that there were a few settlers willing to relocate to this area, and as a result, it was relatively free of people living there. Bohls realized that this was exactly what he was looking for and set out to make a new home for his family.

By the mid-1860s, western Travis County was becoming a very popular place for people to avoid having to live in a big city, but still being close enough to one to reap its benefits. Upon seeing what Mr. Bohls and done to clear the land and make an idyllic setting for his family, a number of families decided to settle around him, creating the first incarnation of the small town that Bee Cave would become.

In the 1870s, Bee Cave is had grown large enough to become an attraction to entrepreneurs. Carl Beck arrived in the community and open to general store on what is now the crossroad of State Highway 71 and Hamilton Pool Road. Travelers coming to and leaving Austin regularly stop here to change goods, get information, and mill cotton. The success of Mr. Beck's general store led him to open a cigar factory and a cotton gin. The successful endeavors again increase the size of a small town and pave the way for a United States Post Office to be opened in the community.

Along with the creation of a Post Office came the need to come up with a name for their town. The area was lined with multiple hives and colonies of Mexican honeybees. Around the creek surrounding Mr. Beck's home, there were large numbers of these hives, which the locals referred to as caves. On a whim, Beck decided this would be a fitting name for their town, and named the post office "Bee Caves". His small joke turned out to be quite fitting and stays with the town even now.

Bee Caves stayed and are incorporated small community for the next 110 years, happily considering itself a small, rural suburb of Austin. However in the 1980s, Austin started a campaign to annex the surrounding communities. Some communities took this in stride and look forward to becoming a part of the thriving city, but Bee Caves took pride in its history of resisting the government of Austin, and began a campaign to convince the state government to incorporate its village.

The fight was not an easy one, but through the hard work of some impassioned local residents, and the refusal to give up and simply be annexed, Bee Caves got its wish. In 1987, Bee Caves was successfully incorporated, and officially resisted the annexation.

In 1876, a post office was opened in the small town, and Anderson himself was the acting postmaster. The town disappeared, and didn’t come back for almost a hundred years. In 1936, a historical marker was placed on the site of the original mill, but it was just a historical location until the late 1900’s.

As Austin began to experience rapid population growth in the late 20th century, many neighboring areas began to see a rise in population as well. What was originally its own small mill town became a small suburb of Austin. The Census Bureau designated it as a town and the population began to rise. In 2000, there were 8,953 residents of Anderson Mill.

This weekend has really shown me that this personal challenge has really made things hard; hard to stand up, hard to wake up, hard to keep from blacking out.

I keep hearing how difficult the challenge is from everyone. My roommate has been starving all weekend long, and has been quite grumpy about it. Not a day has gone by without Duke calling and trying to convince me that some sort of cheating is all right. Samtoy seems to be knocking it out of the park, in terms of menu items, and is still complaining about a nagging hunger. Am I really the only one who is completely dominating this personal challenge?

Yes. I am. On Friday, I drank two pots of coffee and smoked home-rolled cigarettes all day. For dinner, I made a casserole that was outright delicious. I took 5 potatoes and nuked them. Then I sliced them into au gratin shapes and lined a casserole pan with them. I covered them with diced onions and oregano from our oregano plant. I put my big fatty chicken thighs on top of all of this and slathered all of it with the stolen salt and pepper. I covered it all in the two cans of cream of mushroom soup and backed it at 350 for an hour and a half. Let me just say that it tastes wonderful.

At that point, I let the real point of this challenge begin. I started getting hammered. Surprisingly, the shit wine that I bought is now becoming normal to me, and I’m not having much problem smashing it, which is probably why I blacked out on both Friday and Saturday, and could barely walk up the stairs to my bedroom last night.

I supplemented any short bursts of hunger by cooking a baked potato, and ate one large portion of the casserole each day around lunchtime. What I didn’t really expect, though was how effective this wine would be at getting me sauced. So, Sunday, I was really battling a massive hangover. I found myself budgeting my last two dollars on enough ingredients to make the casserole again. I don’t really think that I have enough cash to do this, but I convinced myself that I did and proceeded to smash today’s portion last night.

There are only four days left, and I have not hit the halfway point on my wine. My bag of tobacco is less than a quarter of the way through. I have the ingredients to make a huge pasta dish tonight that will easily last four days. I have five potatoes left. I have $1.50 left in my budget. I have been shithouse drunk for three days. It is completely obvious that I am well on my way to being the absolute grand champion of this completely noncompetitive personal challenge.

When coffee first became an international drink, it was one of the most sought after commodities in the world, and remains the second most traded after oil – ahead of steel, gold and wheat. Initially, it was spread as a “Muslim drink” due to the fact that it originated in Ethiopia and the first wide spread production happened in the Arabian Peninsula. But, after Pope Clement VIII officially declared it a “Christian beverage” in 1600, its popularity exploded.

The cultivation of coffee was such a lucrative business that in the late 1700’s that the Brazilian government sent Francisco Mello Palheta half way around the world to French Guiana solely to obtain a handful of coffee seedlings. The French were absolutely unwilling to share and sent him away empty handed. However, he was apparently quite the charmer. The French governor’s wife was so smitten with him that she gave him a bouquet of flowers when he left. Inside the flowers were a few small coffee seedlings, and the start of the Brazilian coffee trade.

I mention this history of coffee because I finally see the economic power of the commodity. In this week of limited living, it has become a substance worth its weight in gold. Unlike Paul, I got a ridiculously good deal on a good can of coffee, and I have plenty to spare, which is, of course, what led me to start trading it.

I’m sure that I could have used this coffee to trade for anything that would help my agenda. It just so happens that my main plan for coming in first place in this contest is to get completely hammered as much as possible and, of course, eat enough to not die. So, I really needed to utilize this ground up gold to add any available amount of buzz to my situation.

I purchased five liters of wine. For a normal person, this is probably an excessive amount of hooch to stay well buzzed for quite some time, but I’ve been worried from day one that I’d only be able to be hammered for a maximum of 4 days, thanks to my alcoholism and large tolerance. Thanks to coffee, this problem is solved.

First, I traded 4 potatoes for 3 Klonopins. To be clear, I hate using Klonopins for recreational purposes, because they just make me an absolute mess. My thinking here, however, is that each ingested pill will greatly lower the amount of booze needed to get me hammered. The idea was that 3 nights of pill induced wine drunk would leave me with enough wine for one more good old fashioned alcohol buzz. But, now I’ve traded a half a tin of coffee for three Tylenol 3 pills as well.

Unlike Klonopin, the mere mention of Tylenol 3, or any other form of codeine, for that matter, simply makes my heart race. Simply put, I love the shit. So, I’ll be saving these for the last three days of the challenge as a reward to myself for kicking everyone else’s asses so hard. Coffee has taken my initial plan, which was enough in its own right to ensure my first place finish in Welfare Week and given it a shot of steroids.

The point of this whole week is to raise money for (poverty? Fuck, I don’t even know.). There is no question in my mind that I am walking away as the true champion of this fund raising experience.

Yesterday, in a conversation about mental illness, my roommate told me that he believes that I am the biggest narcissist he’s ever met. I don’t know what the fuck he is talking about, but I do know that I’m quite possibly the best god damned grocery shopper for miles around. I knew when this contest was announced, regardless of whether it was announced as a contest or not, that I was going to tear it a new one. But, now that I’ve finished my shopping, I realize that this contest isn’t even going to have any flesh left for me to tear a hole into.

For the sake of honesty, I will admit that I spent an incredibly large portion of my day yesterday on the research and the shopping itself, and that it’s unlikely anyone on welfare would be able to go to the lengths to which I went. I also probably spent $10 on gasoline, but, per the rules, that doesn’t count toward my total, which means, again, that I fucking rule. I decided on the finalized version of my shopping list and then proceeded to call stores all around the Cleveland area to find the cheapest prices that I could. I then plugged addresses into the GPS and spent 5 hours driving around and shopping in order to purchase a tiny amount of groceries. This may be a disproportionately large amount of time to spend on one week’s worth of shopping, but I believe that it has really panned out for me.

I may make both dishes from the outset, split them into sevenths and eat a portion daily for lunch and daily for dinner, or I might just make bigger portions of each and still stick to the one meal daily. Regardless of my choice, I am now very confidant that at least 4 of the meals will be ingested while I’m completely hammered.

The Plan (Welfare Week)

As the final hours before the challenge are winding away, there is some serious tension building here in the office and around our group of friends. Nerves are tight and planning is in full swing.

Paul did his grocery shopping last night, and is convinced that things are going to be tough all over. “I mean, I spent 10 fucking dollars before I even left the produce section! Dude, you are completely screwed.” Oh, Paul.

Last night, Duke came over and had what could only be described as a panic attack. “It doesn’t make any sense! People on food stamps could barter their talents and steal or panhandle! Why can’t I barter for my [recreational medicine]? This is bullshit!”

It has become apparent that a lot of people are thinking this will be the worst week ever. I, on the other hand, am full on stoked to get going. Ann and Paul have really made it a point to continually stress to me that this is not a competition, but the more the trepidation rises from my competitors, the more confidant I am in my impending victory.

I’ve got my plan completely ready, and am preparing to set forth tonight and purchase everything. The more I hear about everyone else’s (dumbass) plans, the more confidence I have.

I just spent the morning making phone calls, and determining the best locations to cash in on the best deals. I’m ready to absolutely dominate welfare week.

It Begins (Welfare Week)

My friend Ann is a habitual do-gooder. Since knowing her, I can’t think of a week that has gone by that hasn’t included her telling me about a charity that she’s involved with, an event to raise awareness, or some sort of young person board that she’s a member of. I respect this about her, mainly due to the fact that I’m nothing at all like her in this matter. Being that she is a friend, however, has gotten me into the participation mindset in the past, not so much for the purpose of helping the masses as for supporting a pal.

Her newest charity event is one to raise awareness of what it is like for the working poor and the unemployed. The goal is to live for a week on a very minimal amount of money, the equivalent of what’s available to someone on food stamps.

I jumped on board with this full steam, but to be honest, it has absolutely nothing to do with altruism . I heard about it, and instantly decided that this was, in fact, an event to raise awareness: awareness that I am going to dominate this challenge.

Andrew joined in the challenge as well, and the ideas started flowing between us. No longer is this a week meant to impart upon us how hard it is to live on so little money. This is now a week for us to show how well we can master our respective ways of living, regardless of income.

I have taken the goal of ensuring that my body stays packed full of nicotine, caffeine, and of course, booze. I intend to showcase my ability to stay hammered through all kinds of economic strife, all the while still eating enough to not die.

The countdown is beginning. Come Friday morning, we’ll have only $26.50 to last for seven days. We’ll be updating you on our menus, our success, and our buzzes. Hopefully, you’ll not be reading anything about our hunger.

While there has been no return of the sub-prime and non-conforming lenders, the scope of the FHA program has continually expanded.
